Resources to be used to ease the burden on family care-givers

September 24th, 2012

(MONONA) Robb Kahl, Democratic candidate for the 47th Assembly District seat, is giving his support to a proposal submitted to Dane County by Sonya Lindquist, Executive Director of the East Madison Monona Coalition of the Aging (EMMCA).  The proposal calls for the expenditure of $6,750 in county funding for theEMMCA Adult Day Center.

“These are trying times for many families in our area.   Not only do many lack the financial resources necessary to provide for the care of a loved one, but wage earners are working longer hours or two jobs just to make ends meet,” Kahl noted.  “When a care giver has to be absent from the home due to a work shift or is stressed and needs respite care EMMCA would be ideally positioned to help those families – if the financial resources were available.”

Colonial Club’s Adult Day Center in Sun Prairie received $49,269 in funding 2012 and is slated to receive the same amount in 2013.  The Oregon Area Senior Center Adult Day Center received $6,750 in funds for 2012 and is slated to receive the same amount in 2013.   The EMMCA, as the third center providing these services in Dane County, would provide a similar level of service to seniors in the Madison/Monona area if the funding request is approved.

“I feel that it is critical we provide EMMCA with the ability to provide sponsorships for seniors throughout the greater Madison/Monona area to attend the EMMCA Day Center at reduced fees or at no charge, dependent on financial need,” Kahl added.  “Providing these minimal funds would help to provide a safe and secure environment for many seniors with dementia and other needs.   While the funding sought will not enable the EMMCA to meet the entire needs of the community, it will allow the EMMCA to be available as a resource for families when their need is greatest.”

Kahl is part-owner of a small business in Monona, executive director for a non-profit organization representing the common interests of management and union labor in the construction industry, and serves on various other business and community boards.

Kahl and his wife Jennifer have been married for 15 years and have four children. Both Robb and Jennifer are active members of their community, volunteering their time to coach youth sports, serve on various city and school committees, and lead fundraising efforts for civic and school causes.
